Famous Officer McNevin Tazing
Once upon a time on a some kind of an all-the-fun-stuff-here website I saw the following video. This video had a commentary like “Officer tazes innocent women for not stepping out from a vehicle”.
To be honest - even on this video using of tazer looks justified enough for me: McNevin said “Put your phone down” twice, “I am going to taze you” triply and “Get out of the car” fourfold - with no adequate response from the driver.
But anyway that video looked strange to me, and as officer’s name and date were on the screen - I’ve started to search for any additional info.
And here’s what I’ve found:
- driver, Victoria Goodwin, was doing 52 mph in a 35-mph zone, and that was a initial cause for traffic stop;
- she had a broken windshield;
- she had a broken tail light;
- she wasn’t wearing a seat belt;
- her license was already suspended.
Rarely abundant list. You gotta be shitbrained to behave like this Victoria Goodwin in such kind of a situation. By the way - she had dropped her daughter off at day care just before all this videotaped mess hapened. I think I don’t need to tel y’all what I think about parents that are speeding with their kids on board.
But wait - that’s not all I’ve found on this story. Last but not least - full, over 6 min lenght video of the same traffic stop - before it was cutted so anyone could shout about police brutality.
Enjoy:
Yep.

Police Brutality? who is even stupid enough to say something like that? when someone resists arrest, swings at a police officer, and has an attitude like that, they deserve the taser. She should have kept her hands visible to the police officer and not have resisted arrest.

What a stupid woman. She had one of those “everyones out to get me because I’m a black minority” attitudes and i cannot stand that because it gives a bad name for all black people. For God’s sake, it was definitely justified. And if i were the officer I probably would have done it earlier, so this video would be 2 minutes instead of 5 or 6.

All of you who agree with the officer are ignorant and need to be tazered. So what the lady had a bad attitude, doesn’t mean she deserved it. I played the video over and over and nowhere does it show her swinging at an officer. Those were 2 big officers and they could’ve gotten her out of the vehicle. They were annoyed by her behavior and didn’t feel like doing the hard part of their job. Furthermore, what if this lady had any medical ailments? That hefty-ass officer would have made her children motherless. Many people have died from being tazered. He’s got an ego-based authority complex like most police officers that I’ve met. I usually don’t wish bad on others but I hope one day that you all have a personal experience with an officer like that on a day when you completely feel you’ve done nothing wrong. God Bless

I feel sorry for his wife, if he has one, whenever she decides to give him any defiance to his commands. If your reading this Mrs. McNevin, get out while you can, I’ll pray for you.

For the record, to the individual claiming that deaths have been caused by the “Tazer” in Active Duty, I would like to point out that Studies show the Majority die not because of Cardiac Related Injuries, but by a combination of Stress related factors such as a condition known as “Excited Delerium”, or a mix of Drug-Related incidences which hightened a (For lack of a better term) Victim’s sensitivity. No studies show a constant and consistantrate of Death or Failure of Less-Lethal Devices. Nay, as their names say, “Less-Lethal” is not “Non-Lethal”. As far as “Rage in his voice”, a Peace Officer is trained to give commands in a powerful, forceful way to ensure compliance. In no way is the Officer in Question being unreasonable. He has given the woman every chance to cooperate, and did not fail in his duties. As for you not seeing her throw a strike, is the video quality *REALLY* that good, against a white background, to insure seeing such a strike, were it not perhaps outside of camera range in the first place? Sir, Ma’am, whoever you are.. I believe you not only have not studied facts, but have resorted to potential Slander against two officers who, in my humble, well-educated (If I do say so Myself) Opinion, were two very professional, fair, and honest Men. I think C.Archer has summed it up about tazer deaths Ivy, but I can’t help commenting on your whiny rantings. If you think you have less of a chance of being hurt by being extricated from a vehicle by force than being tazed, think again. Tazers allow a minimal use of force with no lasting effects. Contrary to what you think, you do actually have to obey the officer when you are stopped. Anything less makes a traffic offence into a criminal matter. But I guess you should know since you’ve “met” so many police officers. I hate to guess what for. Dealing with people like you Ivy and others like you are what makes policing stressful. I think most police officers would take comfort in knowing that they don’t care what people like you (Ivy) think. As for Mr. undisclosed (#28), how can one comment on gibberish that. It was spoken like a true criminal. I feel more dumb having read your comments.

Cory said it all. It is very simple: when a police officer tells you to do something, you just do it. He is not telling you for the sake of it, he is doing his job, that belive it or not is to protect us. And notice he is calling you ’sir’ and ending his sentences with ‘please’, which is more that one can say of the subjects of his attentions.
After you comply with whatever order he has given you, you are free to avail yourself of the legal system if you feel you have been wrongly treated. A system, least we forget, that scrutinizes police work with the utmost severity, so you are unlikely to be the victim of abuse or injustice.
As for people like Ivy and the rest, I think they would find in amazement that complying with police instructions and being reasonably courteus with the officer will make things much nicer for everybody, specially you.

We haven’t quite got tasers here in NZ. They’re being trialled. I look forward to having them available as a tactical option when the situation requires it. Not entirely sure I would have tasered the woman at that stage, but then if I’d wrestled her out of the veh, there’s every chance that she or I would have been injured. I know far too many of my colleagues wouldn’t have been that patient with her and she would have been handled a whole lot rougher than what she was in this case.
With the proliferation of firearms and handguns in America, I think Officer McNevin did an excellent job. What would he have done without the taser option? a) Physical fight - possibly resulting in injury to both parties? opening self up to litigation for excess force? b) pepper spray resulting in 40-60mins of pain/discomfort for suspect - in NZ we’re not allowed to use OC spray on passively resistant subjects. c) Baton the woman? d) call Dog unit? I think taser was a very good option, and it worked perfectly.

You probably get pulled over for driving a $50 car because you on dis’bility. What’s your dis’bility? Can’t hold down a job doesn’t cut it –is not a valid reason, next.
And to anyone who says the Police “harrass” people, I give you this: (insert the name of your favorite local Officer)
One of the civilian email participants posed the following question:
“I would like to know how it is possible for police officers to
continually harass people and get away with it?”
From the “other side” (the law enforcement side) a cool cop with a sense
of humor replied:
It is not easy. In California we average one cop for every 2,000
people.About 60% of those cops are on patrol, where we do most of the
harassing. One-fifth of that 60% are on duty at any given moment and are
available for harassing people. So, one cop is responsible for harassing
about 10,000 residents.
When you toss in the commercial, business and tourist locations that
attract people from other areas, sometimes you have a situation where a
single cop is responsible for harassing 20,000 or more people each day.
A ten-hour shift runs 36,000 seconds. This gives a cop one second to
harass a person, and three-fourths of a second to eat a donut AND then
find a new person to harass. This is not an easy task. Most cops are not
up to it, day in and day out. It is just too tiring. What we do is
utilize some tools to help us narrow down those people which we harass.
They are as follows:
PHONE: People will call us up and point out things that cause us to
focus on a person for special harassment. “My neighbor is beating his
wife” is a code phrase we use. Then we come out and give special
harassment. Another popular one on a weeknight is, “The kids next door
are having a loud party.”
CARS: We have special cops assigned to harass people who drive. They
like to harass the drivers of fast cars, cars blasting music, cars with
expired registration stickers and the like. It is lots of fun when you
pick them out of traffic for nothing more obvious than running a red
light. Sometimes you get to really heap the harassment on when you find
they have drugs in the car, are driving drunk, or they have an
outstanding warrant.
RUNNERS: Some people take off running just at the sight of a police
officer. Nothing is quite as satisfying as running after them like a
beagle on the scent of a bunny. When you catch them you can harass them
for hours.
CODES: When you can think of nothing else to do, there are books that
give ideas for reasons to harass folks. They are called “Codes” - Penal,
Vehicle,Health and Safety, Business and Professional Codes, to name just
a few. They spell out all sorts of things for which you can really mess
with people.
After you read the code, you can just drive around for a while until you
find someone violating one of these listed offenses and harass them.
Just last week I saw a guy smash a car window. Well, the code says that
is not allowed. That meant I got permission to harass this guy. It is a
pretty cool system that we have set up, and it works pretty well. We
seem to have a never-ending supply of folks to harass. And we get away
with it. Why? Because the good citizens who pay the tab actually like
the fact that we keep the streets safe for them. Next time you are in my
town, give me a single finger wave.
That will be a signal that you wish for me to take a little closer look
at you, and then maybe I’ll find a reason to harass YOU!
Signed your local Cop

Mark, with all do respect. Your an idiot. You must have had a bad experience with the police. He didnt taze her “because he could” as you say. He tazed her because she did not listen, period. What she did is a form of resisting arrest. NO she did not try and hit him. But you know what? she could have. And I know I’m not going to wait around until she does. Verbal disrespect usually escalates a situation and she was verbally resisting. The Officer has to control the scene or bad things can happen to them. what is he supposed to do? “OK maam. You finish your phone conversation and you let me know when your done. Its ok, Ill wait. I’m going to let you competely control this traffic stop.” Come on. She wasnt listening so something had to be done with a disrespecting individual. As stated earlier. The Officer could have reached (not good tactics) in and pulled her out but that wouldnt have looked good and some peoples eyes, either. In this job we have to act and dont have a lot of time. If she had a gun instead of a cell phone the Officer could be dead. And he absolutely would be dead if he didnt act.

I’m willing to bet they were always there! If not already in LE (Law Enforcement), do yourself a favor and take a ride along (if you already haven’t… wink-wink). To see what an officer has to deal with throughout a shift will sway your opinion. Perhaps if certain people could have learned the proper moral values at an earlier age, then they wouldn’t find themselves in hot water with the PO PO. Just can’t teach common sense!

I have been out here trucking the continent for 27 years, and have encountered dozens of good “bears”. as one Mass. bear said, “You as the citizen control the majority of the encounter by your attitude”. Yes there are bad actors in every job, and yes I know of some innocent people being victimized by them. The bad bears don’t fully understand the emotional consequences wrought upon the innocent people, and the hatred it breeds. I feel it too. However, perhaps diplomacy, and calmness may have worked in officer McNevins case, to foster cooperation by the woman. Hard call. As bears, it is often forgotten that they are people first, and as such are subject to criticism for having feelings, lack of patience, and, yes, a breaking point. I am neither for nor against this tasering, but it sure did work. I also think those of you who wish to cannonize him or deify him, need to realize that you may be one of those people with a propensity toward violence, and should (if you are in possesion of one)surrender your badge until you lose the ego, and recieve some sensitivity training. Or become a victim of a rogue “bear” yourselves.
take care, be safe, and we’ll seeya out there, Brian.

You NEVER want to let someone talk on a cell phone during a traffic stop. Traffic stop 101, if you DO… watch your back, their help may be coming up behind you.
That was textbook use of force. He asked her (several times), he told her (several times), then he made her.

If the officer would give her at least a few more seconds to do what she needed then all of this would have never happened.
Cops need to be properly trained I am sick of this shit-

First to Kde, you do not get a few more seconds to do what a cop tells you. You do what they tell you, Now. This is for officer safety purposes. Second, to all of you out there who say the cops just harass people: Its funny that you say that now but when your neighbors dog is barking to much, who do you call? When your kids bike is stolen or your stero has been jacked, who do you call? When you mom or sister had been involved in a crash and needs help, you call the cops. Funny that every hats cops, until they need one. Then we cant get there fast enough. The only people that feel that cops harrass people are the people who are doing something wrong. Then in this case your damn rite you are going to be harassed. That is the job to be up in your shit until you straighten your ass out and do things rite. No one is saying you have to be perfect, there is no such thing. But if you do something that you know is going to get you locked up, don’t bitch about it when you do finally get caught and thrown behind bars. This officer showed great patients and attempted to be professional. But when sir or ma’am don’t get through it’s time to flip the switch and get the job done.

Its a close call really, Yes the woman in question did tell the officers that she was not able to roll over to her stomach, but the simple fact still lyes and that is that is she had done what the officer had told her in the first place she would never have been tased.
I think it comes down to people are just not educated on police tactics.
1st and foremost rule when dealing with anyone from law enforcement is… when they tell you directly to do some thing you do it no questions asked.
For those who are not out on the field everyday its easy for you to say this is brutality, but the simple fact lies that she, even though she is a women and she is nothing standing next to a burly police officer like McNevin, she could have had a weapon, another person in the car. the car and inside the car is an unknown to the officers, and it would make them edgy having to go into the car to retrieve this stupid and stubborn woman.
I would like to personally congratulate officer McNevin and the other attending officer for a job well done. I would have handled that situation exactly the same way.

In as much as I am loath to comment to a gallery of the adamant faithful, I feel it may, in some small way, help my countrymen. Those who would benefit from a police state are, secondarily, the police themselves and, primarily, those who pay the police. The only groups who wouldn’t have to live with the knowledge that electrical current can be run through them at any time they deviate from the orders issued to them.
I wonder what those Patriots of old would think of this situation. America, as it stands today, borrows money from a private bank, the Federal Reserve, instead of printing gold-backed currency for itself, then pays the Fed back with interest for the imaginary money it borrowed. This is not conpsiricy theory but fact. You can look up the laws of 1913 for yourself and I encourage you to do so. Control of this country no longer lies in the hands of the people, or the government that they established. We are, instead, a nation of many who have become beholden to a few. Everyone knows there is legislation that is corrupt. It seems only human nature at this point. Something that everyone accepts.
But do you, the officers who risk your lives everyday, know where your ordes come from? The common populace is not to question orders from another human being (man first officer second) whom, as previously stated, isn’t perfect. You are not to question orders from your superiors. Your superiors are not to question orders from the government. The government is not to question orders from the private bankers at the Federal Reserve (which is no more a Federal institution than Federal Express) that fund them.
Who rules this country? Who do we, as citizens of America, serve? Despite what seems to be popular opinion on this board, the pain of another human being isn’t laughable. No matter how much a child may cry and complain, no decent human being would force that child to stick a fork in an electrical outlet to punish it, even if it had done wrong and should have know better.
I must disagree, especially, with the poster named sniper22. Not all people who feel concerned about harassment are wrongdoers, only those who are capable of making a mistake.
I, for one, am glad that McNevin and his taser were not around to help the British fight George Washington and the other American heroes who founded this country. The greatest wrongdoers (from England’s standpoint) in our glorious history.
