Darrell Edward Lunsford, Sr. (October 20, 1943 – January 23, 1991) was a police constable with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office in Texas. On January 23, 1991, Lunsford pulled over a vehicle with three men inside. The three men were illegally transporting the drug marijuana. Lunsford grew suspicious of the suspects and requested to see what was inside the trunk of the vehicle. When Lunsford saw the marijuana, the suspects attacked Lunsford, then shot and killed him with his own service weapon. They then drove off, leaving Lunsford and his patrol car behind. The entire incident was videotaped on a dashboard camera in Constable Lunford’s cruiser. The three suspects were found at a later date and were then arrested. It was because of the video camera in the cruiser that the police were able to arrest the three killers, who were later imprisoned.

This video was taped just eight months after Constable Darrell Lunsford was shot and killed while on a traffic stop in Garrison. During the stop, Constable Lunsford found marijuana in the trunk of the suspect’s vehicle. The three suspects then jumped Constable Lunsford and shot and killed him with his own service weapon. The entire incident was videotaped by the video camera in Constable Lunsford’s patrol car. Because of the video tape, the three suspects were arrested, tried and convicted of his murder.

This situation is very similar to Lunsford’s fatal encounter. But the trooper was saved because of the actions he learned from watching Lunsford’s dashcam tape. One of the suspects pulled out a gun to kill the trooper but was shot in the process. After another attempt to kill the trooper, he was once again shot repeatedly but after this, he died from his wounds at the scene. The other two suspects escaped that night, but the next day they were found and arrested.

I feel hate towards both of them. The Miami officer is surely a moron, but what FHP officer did is a way out of line.

UPDATE: I have to take my words back and change my mind about this. Here’s what I’ve found: “According to SunPass records, Lopez had been clocked going over 100 MPH more than 114 times in the year prior to the stop, and was reportedly seen speeding even after the arrest”. Damn it, 114 times a year – that’s every third day. Or every week, if he also speeds when he drives back. Now my position is that: Miami officer is a way bigger moron that I’ve thought before, and FHP gal is totally right. If it was me keeping that highway safe (and people on it), and I had some idiot speeding over 100 MPH that regularly, I would’ve been mad also. And if this idiot is o police officer – that would only made things worse.
